José Adolfo Macías Villamar, a notorious drug trafficker known as "Fito," was recaptured in Ecuador over a year after escaping from prison. Macías, who led the gang "Los Choneros," was wanted by authorities in Ecuador and the US, where he was indicted on charges of importing thousands of pounds of cocaine. He was found hiding in a small hole beneath a kitchen counter in a house in Manta, his hometown, and was arrested by the Ecuadorian army. The recapture comes after a period of violence in Ecuador, including riots, bombings, and kidnappings, that followed Macías' escape. Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa announced the arrest, stating that the country would "reclaim" itself and that "no truce" would be given to criminals.
